The eight pieces of brocade (ba duan jin) is a simple set of exercises (actually two sets, one done while sitting and one while standing) that was created to maintain the energy, flexibility, and health of soldiers in twelfth century China. Qigong is practiced in different ways as a spiritual discipline, in martial arts such as tai chi chuan, or for health or longevity. So qigong (also spelled chikung) is energy practice.
